Foreign Ministry Spokeswoman Zhang Qiyue on the First Annual Report by the "US Congressional-Executive Commission on China"
2002-10-05 00:00

Q: What is your comment on the first annual report by the “US Congressional-Executive Commission on China”?

A: Recently, a report by the so-called “US Congressional-Executive Commission on China” attacks China and interferes in China’s internal affairs by using issues of human rights, religions and “Falun Gong” cult.  It is full of arrogance and prejudice and turns a blind eye to the great achievements by China in human rights and legal system building.  We are strongly dissatisfied with and resolutely opposed to it, and have made solemn representations to the US side.

The Chinese Government is always committed to promoting and protecting the human rights and fundamental freedom of Chinese people of all ethnic groups.  China’s human rights and legal system building have been continuously improving and have never been better before.  This is recognized by all.  It is for the very purpose of protecting the fundamental human rights of the Chinese people that the Chinese Government outlawed the “Falun Gong” cult according to law and struck against the East Turkistan terrorist groups.  These measures are applauded and supported by the Chinese people.

We demand that the US Congress and other relevant institutions mend their ways, stop interference in China’s internal affairs and do more that will serve China-US relations and promote the mutual understanding between the two peoples.  The US Administration should take seriously the solemn position of the Chinese side, refrain from adopting the so-called proposals of the report and take earnest measures to erase its negative impact.
