Wang Yi Meets with Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov of Russia
2019-07-27

On July 26, 2019 local time, State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi met with Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov of Russia on the sidelines of the Formal Meeting of the BRICS Ministers of Foreign Affairs in Brazil.

Wang Yi said, President Xi Jinping made a historic visit to Russia in June and together with President Vladimir Putin of Russia, elevated the bilateral relations to China-Russia comprehensive strategic partnership of coordination for a new era. China-Russia relations thus enjoyed the "double happiness" of the 70th anniversary of its establishment and upgrading of its quality. The two sides should make joint efforts to well implement the important consensus reached by the two Heads of State, push for the new vitality of China-Russia relations in the new era, achieve more new results, and constantly improve the strategic value of bilateral relations. The two sides should well plan and prepare for the high-level exchanges in the next stage, consolidate political mutual trust, strengthen people-to-people and cultural exchanges, and expand practical cooperation, especially in the fields of high technology and energy.

Wang Yi pointed out, today's world is undergoing profound changes unseen in a century, and the chaotic situation is becoming more and more prominent. However, China-Russia relations have been increasingly firm and tenacious and become stabilizers in the international situation. The Chinese side is willing to work shoulder by shoulder with the Russian side in international affairs to safeguard the legitimate rights and interests of the two countries as well as international fairness and justice, and work together to promote regional and world peace and stability.

Sergey Lavrov agreed with Wang Yi's comments and suggestions on Russia-China relations. He expressed that the Russian side is willing to work with the Chinese side to well implement the consensus reached by the two Heads of State and promote the Russia-China comprehensive strategic partnership of coordination for a new era for steady development and more practical results. Under the current circumstances, the comprehensive and strategic nature of Russia-China cooperation has become more prominent. Russia and China should strengthen coordination and cooperation in regional and international affairs to inject more stability into today's world. Russia-China strategic coordination has strong internal momentum and is not affected by external factors. Any attempt to provoke Russia-China cooperation is doomed to failure.

The two sides also exchanged in-depth views on international and regional issues of common concern such as the Iranian nuclear issue and the Venezuelan issue.
