|President Sebastian Pinera of Chile Meets with Wang Yi|
On July 27, 2019 local time, President Sebastian Pinera of Chile met with State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi at the President's Office in Santiago.
Sebastian Pinera asked Wang Yi to convey his sincere greetings to President Xi Jinping. Sebastian Pinera said, Chile respects China's time-honored and splendid history and culture and admires the tremendous achievements made by the People's Republic of China in the past 70 years since its founding. Chile has always attached great importance to Chile-China relations which have maintained stable and sound development since the establishment of diplomatic relationship nearly 50 years ago. The Chilean side is willing to further strengthen cooperation with the Chinese side. China is welcome to expand its investment in Chile, and more Chinese companies are welcome to participate in Chile's economic development, including 5G network bidding. Chile firmly upholds multilateralism and free trade, opposes various forms of protectionism, and expects China and the United States to resolve economic and trade frictions through dialogue and consultation. Chile thanks the Chinese side for supporting the Chilean side in hosting the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) Economic Leaders' Meeting in November and highly appreciates the Chinese side's energy conservation and emission reduction measures. Chile stands ready to enhance international cooperation in climate change with the Chinese side and jointly work for a success of the United Nations (UN) Climate Change Conference which will be held in December in Chile. Chile highly values China's status and influence in international affairs and welcomes China's greater role in Latin American affairs.
Wang Yi conveyed President Xi Jinping's warm greetings to Sebastian Pinera. Wang Yi said, Mr. President paid a successful visit to China and attended the second Belt and Road Forum for International Cooperation in April this year, which effectively promoted the development of China-Chile relations. The main purpose of my visit is to promote the implementation of the important consensus reached by the two Heads of State and to make political preparations for high-level exchanges between the two countries in the next stage. The Chinese side is willing to take the upgrading of the China-Chile Free Trade Agreement as an opportunity to further promote the upgrading and improvement of trade and investment between the two countries. The Chinese side appreciates Chile's opening-up policy, and will encourage Chinese companies to actively participate in the construction of 5G and infrastructure projects in Chile, and make scientific and technological innovation and digital economy new growth points for China-Chile cooperation. China will strongly support Chile in well hosting this year's APEC Economic Leaders' Meeting and sending out positive signal of supporting multilateralism and free trade and opposing unilateralism and protectionism. The Chinese side will also support Chile in well hosting the UN Climate Change Conference to be held in December to push the international community to maintain the momentum of cooperation in climate change. The Chinese side has always been committed to safeguarding the international system with the UN as its core, the international order based on the international law, the multilateral trading system represented by the World Trade Organization, and the common interests and legitimate rights and interests of developing countries and emerging market economies. The Chinese side is willing to maintain communication and coordination with the Chilean side on international and Latin American affairs.
