China and India Hold the First Meeting of China-India High-level People-to-People and Cultural Exchanges Mechanism Wang Yi and External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj of India Co-chair the Meeting

On December 21, 2018 local time, the first meeting of China-India High-level People-to-People and Cultural Exchanges Mechanism was held in New Delhi. State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi and External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj of India co-chaired the meeting.

Wang Yi and Sushma Swaraj first read the congratulatory letters to the meeting from President Xi Jinping and Prime Minister Narendra Modi respectively.

Wang Yi said that establishing China-India high-level people-to-people and cultural exchanges mechanism is an important consensus reached by President Xi Jinping and Prime Minister Narendra Modi. Today, we officially launched this mechanism, which is of extraordinary significance. This is an important step in implementing the consensus of the leaders of the two countries, an important measure to promote the comprehensive development of China-India relations, and also an important platform for the revival of oriental civilization. It is conducive to consolidating the public opinion foundation for bilateral relations, promoting the healthy development of bilateral relations, advancing the harmonious coexistence of different civilizations, and jointly safeguarding the peace and stability of the world. In accordance with the direction set by the leaders of the two countries in the congratulatory letters, we should well develop and make good use of this mechanism, and promote people-to-people bonds so as tocontribute to the building of a closer development partnership.

Wang Yi pointed out that this year is an extraordinary year in the development history of China-India relations. President Xi Jinping and Prime Minister Narendra Modi held a landmark meeting in Wuhan and met three times at multilateral occasions, which have clarified the general direction of China-India relations in the future and ushered bilateral cooperation into a new stage of development. At present, China is moving towards the "two centenary goals" and India is committed to striving for the building of the"New India". China and India, as two ancient civilizations, have embarked on the road of national rejuvenation hand in hand, providing a broad stage for strengthening people-to-people and cultural exchanges between the two countries. We are ready to work with the Indian side to give full play to the coordinating role of the people-to-people and cultural exchanges mechanism, mobilize various resources and give full play to our respective advantages in accordance with the consensus reached by the leaders of the two countries, so as to push China-India people-to-people and cultural exchanges to make new breakthroughs and achieve new development under new historical conditions.

Sushma Swarajsaid that the leaders of the two countries agreed to set up a high-level people-to-people and cultural exchanges mechanism between the two countries during their meeting in Wuhan, which showed their vision. India and China are two ancient civilizations with profound cultural ties. The launch of the India-China high-level people-to-people and cultural exchanges mechanism will surely provide a new platform for bilateral people-to-people and cultural exchanges and provide new impetus for bilateral relations and cooperation. The complete success of the first meeting will also elevate bilateral people-to-people and cultural exchanges and cooperation to new highs and make the bond of people-to-people and cultural exchanges a stabilizer of bilateral relations.

At the meeting, heads of relevant departments of China and India had in-depth discussions and reached broad consensus on exchanges and cooperation in such fields as culture, media, film and television, museums, sports, youth, tourism, locality, traditional medicine and yoga, education and think tanks.

During his visit, Wang Yi will attend a series of events for people-to-people and cultural exchanges including the opening ceremony of the 3rd China-India high level media forum, the China-India youth photo exhibition, the opening ceremony and cultural evening of the high-level people-to-people and cultural exchanges mechanism,and the closing ceremony of the dialogue between Chinese and Indian civilizations.
