Wang Yi Meets with Minister of Foreign Affairs, the European Union and Cooperation Josep Borrell Fontelles of Spain

On November 27, 2018 local time, State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi, who was accompanying President Xi Jinping for his state visit to Spain, met with Minister of Foreign Affairs, the European Union and Cooperation Josep Borrell Fontelles of Spain in Madrid.

Wang Yi expressed that China-Spain relations have always maintained stable and sound development since the establishment of bilateral diplomatic relations 45 years ago. President Xi Jinping's historic visit to Spain will inject strong impetus into the development of China-Spain relations. We are willing to, together with the Spanish side, deepen cooperation under the Belt and Road Initiative as well as in various areas, intensify people-to-people and cultural exchanges, enhance coordination and cooperation under the frameworks of the United Nations, the G20 and the World Trade Organization, and jointly safeguard multilateralism and free trade system, in a bid to promote China-Europe relations for sound and stable development.

Josep Borrell Fontelles noted that President Xi Jinping's visit this time is of great importance, and will become a new starting point for the development of the relations between the two countries. China is the most important cooperative partner of Spain in Asia. Both countries maintain strong political, economic and cultural ties. The Spanish government attaches great importance to developing its relations with China, and stands ready to participate in the construction of the Belt and Road Initiative, expand the scale of bilateral trade and uplift the level of two-way investment, in a bid to open up broader prospects for bilateral practical cooperation. The Spanish side supports multilateralism and free trade, and is willing to play an active role in the development of Europe-China relations in the European Union.
