Wang Yi Meets with Foreign Secretary Shahidul Haque of Bangladesh

On November 9, 2018, State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi met with Foreign Secretary Shahidul Haque of Bangladesh in Beijing, who was in China for the diplomatic consultation. They mainly exchanged views on bilateral relations and issue of repatriation of people escaping clashes from the Rakhine State.

Wang Yi expressed that China and Bangladesh are strategic cooperative partners. Under the current situation, the Chinese side is willing to, together with the Bangladeshi side, enhance high-level exchanges, deepen practical cooperation under the framework of the Belt and Road Initiative, and realize mutual benefit and win-win results, so as to jointly safeguard multilateralism and rights and interests of developing countries.

Wang Yi pointed out that the Chinese side is pleased to see that both Bangladesh and Myanmar have made important progress in handling the issue of the Rakhine State, and agreed to start the repatriation of the first batch of the people escaping clashes from the Rakhine State in the middle of this month. It will create a good starting for dealing with this complex historical issue and accumulate experience for repatriation in next step. The Chinese side believes that both Bangladesh and Myanmar have ability and wisdom to well handle the issue, and the Chinese side is willing to continuously provide necessary support to this end. The specialized agencies of the United Nations should play a constructive role in this regard, not the other way around.

Shahidul Haque expressed that the Bangladeshi side attaches high importance to the relations with China, and is ready to work with the Chinese side to jointly implement the consensus reached by the two heads of state and deepen bilateral strategic cooperative partnership. The Bangladeshi side will, in accordance with the consensus reached between Bangladesh and Myanmar before, strengthen communication and coordination with the Myanmar side, and push forward the repatriation of people escaping clashes from the Rakhine State as scheduled. The Bangladeshi side highly valued and thanked the Chinese side's strong support and assistance.
