Wang Yi Meets with Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Josaia Voreqe Bainimarama of Fiji
2018-10-30

On October 30, 2018 local time, State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi met with Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Josaia Voreqe Bainimarama of Fiji in Suva.

Josaia Voreqe Bainimarama first asked Wang Yi to convey his warm greetings to President Xi Jinping and Premier Li Keqiang. Josaia Voreqe Bainimarama said that China is a close friend of Fiji. Since the establishment of diplomatic relations 43 years ago, the relations between the two countries have developed rapidly. The friendly exchanges and mutually beneficial cooperation in such fields as trade, investment, people-to-people and cultural engagement and sports as well as at local level have flourished, which has brought tremendous opportunities for the economic and social development of Fiji. The recent opening of the Hong Kong-Zhuhai-Macao Bridge is admirable, indicating that China is playing a leading role in such fields as innovation and infrastructure. Congratulating China on its great development achievements, the Fijian side hopes to constantly strengthen friendly cooperation between the two countries to benefit the people of Fiji. I would like to reiterate that the Fijian side will continue to unswervingly adhere to the one-China policy. The Fijian side speaks highly of the Belt and Road Initiative, regards it as an important direction for mutually beneficial cooperation between Fiji and China in the future, and will firmly support and actively participate in the cooperation under the joint construction of the Belt and Road Initiative.

Wang Yi conveyed the greetings of the Chinese leaders to Josaia Voreqe Bainimarama. Wang Yi said that the friendship between China and Fiji has withstood the test of international vicissitudes and become ever firmer as time goes by. The two countries have always treated each other equally with mutual respect, mutual understanding and mutual support. China firmly supports Fiji in following a development path that is in line with its own national conditions and wins its people's support. As a good friend and good partner of Fiji, we have full confidence in the future of Fiji. Wang Yi emphasized that the fine tradition of China's diplomacy is that China always advocates that all countries, big or small, are equal, and always stands together with developing countries, as well as always safeguards the legitimate interests of small and medium-sized developing countries. The Chinese side has never attached any political conditions to its assistance to developing countries and never sought any private benefits. China-Fiji cooperation is South-South cooperation, and a mutual support between friends and brothers. Attaching importance to Fiji's position and role in South Pacific island countries, the Chinese side is willing to better integrate the Belt and Road Initiative with Fiji's 20-year National Development Plan and strengthen all-round practical cooperation to promote Fiji's economic and social development. Given the current situation that the international rules have been impacted by unilateralism and protectionism, China and Fiji should launch negotiations on free trade agreement as soon as possible, and safeguard multilateralism and free trade with practical actions. Fiji is welcome to participate in the First China International Import Expo.
