|Wang Yi Meets with Minister of Foreign Affairs José Valencia Amores of Ecuador|
On September 26, 2018 local time, State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi met with Minister of Foreign Affairs José Valencia Amores of Ecuador on the sidelines of the United Nations (UN) General Assembly in New York.
Wang Yi expressed that China and Ecuador are comprehensive strategic partners, and the two sides have always understood and supported each other. The Chinese side appreciates that Ecuador attaches importance to its relations with China and adheres to the one-China principle. The Chinese side also regards China-Ecuador relations as an important part of developing relations with Latin America. We are willing to further strengthen bilateral relations and jointly promote the development of China-Latin America relations. The two sides can accelerate the integration of development strategies by taking the joint construction of the Belt and Road Initiative as a platform so as to tap into new potential for cooperation between the two countries and open up new space.
Wang Yi said that the current world faces the challenge of unilateralism, and international rules and multilateral order have been seriously impacted. If the international system fails, all countries will suffer a lot from it, and small and medium-sized countries will bear the brunt. To some extent, the current period is crucial for a tug of war between unilateralism and multilateralism. Since the opening of the current session of the UN General Assembly, the majority of members have advocated adhering to multilateralism, safeguarding the authority of the UN, abiding by international rules, and forming synergy to cope with the current challenges of unilateralism and hegemonism. We are willing to strengthen communication and coordination with all parties including Ecuador.
José Valencia Amores noted that China is of vital importance to Ecuador. The two countries enjoy a long-standing traditional friendship with satisfactory development in bilateral relations at present. Speaking highly of China's tremendous achievements in economic and social development, the Ecuadorian side thanks the Chinese side’s strong support, and hopes to further deepen bilateral practical cooperation in various fields. The Ecuadorian side believes that the Belt and Road Initiative is conducive to promoting cooperation in trade, investment, finance, energy, connectivity and non-governmental exchanges, and stands ready to actively discuss strengthening relevant cooperation with the Chinese side. In the current international environment, the international community needs to maintain the role of the international system and the UN more than ever before. The Ecuadorian side supports deepening cooperation between Latin America and China, strengthening coordination in multilateral affairs, jointly upholding multilateralism, preventing unilateralism from dominating the world, and continuing to maintain the rules-based international trade order.
