|Wang Yi Attends United Nations (UN) Security Council Open Meeting on Safeguarding International Peace and Security|
On September 26, 2018 local time, State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi attended the United Nations (UN) Security Council Open Meeting on Safeguarding International Peace and Security at the UN Headquarters in New York.
Wang Yi expressed that safeguarding international peace and security is the UN Security Council's primary responsibility endowed by the UN Charter, as well as the common undertaking of all members of the UN Security Council. Against the complicated challenges facing international peace and security, the UN Security Council should adhere to mandates of the UN Charter and fulfill its duties in a just manner, stick to the fundamental direction of political settlement, uphold enhancement of unity and promotion of consensus, and insist on overall coordination to form synergy.
Wang Yi said that in terms of non-proliferation, the Chinese side advocates that first, we should carry forward the principle of rule of law, and consolidate and improve the international non-proliferation regime; second, we should adhere to taking multiple measures simultaneously to advance the implementation of Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty in a balanced way; and third, we should boost international cooperation, and improve various countries' non-proliferation capacity to achieve universal security.
Wang Yi noted that the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) on the Iranian nuclear issue is a hard-won outcome of multilateralism which has been unanimously verified and approved by the UN Security Council. The Chinese side encourages Iran to continue fulfilling the various commitments it has made. Meanwhile, the legitimate rights of various parties to carry out normal economic and trade cooperation with the Iranian side should also be respected. The Chinese side calls on all parties to safeguard the seriousness, integrity and effectiveness of the JCPOA from a long-term perspective and on the basis of the overall situation.
Wang Yi expressed that the Korean Peninsula has seen an obvious easing momentum, and the Chinese side has also made unremitting efforts to this end. We should cherish and seize the current opportunity, translate the political commitments of various parties into practical actions, and continue moving forward toward the general direction of realizing the denuclearization and establishing the peace mechanism of the Korean Peninsula, so as to strive for the realization of lasting peace on the Korean Peninsula at an early date.
Wang Yi stressed that China firmly abides by its solemn commitments to the purposes and principles of the UN Charter, resolutely safeguards the contemporary international system with the UN at the core, and earnestly fulfills its international responsibilities and obligations. We should make joint efforts, adhere to joint contribution and shared benefits, and jointly build peace and security.
Wang Yi finally emphasized that China has always adhered to the principle of non-interference in other countries' internal affairs, and this is a tradition of China's diplomacy, which has won widespread praise from the international community. We did not, do not and will not interfere in the internal affairs of any country, and we do not accept any groundless accusations made against China. We call on other countries to abide by the purposes and principles of the UN Charter as well, and avoid any interference in other countries' internal affairs.
