On August 19, 2018, State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi held talks in Beijing with Foreign Minister Rodolfo Nin Novoa of Uruguay.
Wang Yi expressed that China and Uruguay are good friends and good partners enjoying mutual trust. Since the establishment of diplomatic relations 30 years ago, China-Uruguay relations have maintained stability and achieved progress. It is not only attributed to the personal care and strategic guidance of the leaders of the two countries, but also owes to the solid foundation of political mutual trust and to the adherence of both sides to equal treatment and mutual respect. Foreign Minister Rodolfo Nin Novoa signed cooperation documents with the Chinese side including the joint building of the Belt and Road Initiative and the agreement on service trade during his visit to China this time, which fully demonstrates the strategic vision of Uruguay to develop its relations with China. We highly appreciate such gestures of Uruguay, and are full of confidence in the future of China-Uruguay relations.
Wang Yi pointed out that both sides should maintain all-round exchanges, and continue to support each other on issues concerning respective core interests and major concerns. Both sides should enhance the alignment of development strategies, well plan and promote the construction of the Belt and Road Initiative, and propel practical cooperation in various fields and people-to-people and cultural exchanges to achieve more outcomes. The Chinese side appreciates that the Uruguayan side vigorously supports the overall cooperation between China and Latin American and Caribbean (LAC) countries, and attaches importance to the significant role played by the Uruguayan side in the Southern Common Market (Mercosur). It is hoped that the Uruguayan side will continue to play its positive role and promote the optimization and upgrade of cooperation between China and the LAC countries, in a bid to push the dialogue and cooperation between China and Mercosur to achieve new progress.
Rodolfo Nin Novoa expressed that China is a sincere friend of Uruguay. Since Uruguay and China established diplomatic relations 30 years ago, bilateral relations have continuously achieved positive progress with cooperation between the two sides in extensive fields such as economy and trade, culture, science and technology being constantly deepened. Having seen the tangible and huge outcomes, the Uruguayan side is willing to constantly explore and march forward to further elevate the level of bilateral relations. As the first country of Mercosur to sign the memorandum of understanding on the joint building of the Belt and Road Initiative with the Chinese side, the Uruguayan side is willing to take it as an opportunity to further bring Mercosur and China closer and become an important hub for exchanges and cooperation between South America and China.
Both sides also exchanged views on international and regional issues of common concern, and agreed to enhance solidarity and cooperation, jointly oppose protectionism, safeguard multilateralism and an open world economy, and maintain the common interests of developing countries.
