|Wang Yi: The Chinese Side Stands Ready to Work with Various Parties to Continue Safeguarding the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) on the Iranian Nuclear Issue|
On August 3, 2018, State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi held a bilateral meeting with Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif of Iran on the sidelines of the Foreign Ministers' Meetings on East Asia Cooperation in Singapore, mainly exchanging views on the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) on the Iranian nuclear issue.
Mohammad Javad Zarif expressed that Iran and China are strategic partners. The Chinese side has played an important role in reaching and implementing the JCPOA on the Iranian nuclear issue. Iran stands ready to continue to safeguard and implement the agreement, and will make joint efforts to this end with various parties including China and European countries. The United States (US) has unilaterally announced its pullout from the JCPOA and also threatened to restart unilateral sanctions on Iran, which violates the related resolutions of the United Nations (UN) and is opposed by all parties. It is hoped that the US side could earnestly listen to and face the correct voices of the international community to reverse its wrongdoings.
Wang Yi noted that at present, whether the implementation of the JCPOA on the Iranian nuclear issue can be continued has aroused high attention from the international community, and it has brought new risks to and posed new challenges for the situation in the Middle East. The Chinese side always holds the view that the JCPOA on the Iranian nuclear issue is a multilateral agreement verified and approved by the UN Security Council and accords with the common interests of all parties and the international community, which must be respected and safeguarded so as to maintain the authority of the UN, the effectiveness of multilateral agreements and the credibility of the international rules. To this end, the Chinese side is willing to enhance communication and cooperation with all parties including the Iranian side and make all-out efforts to continue the effectiveness of the JCPOA on the Iranian nuclear issue, in a bid to jointly well maintain peace and stability in the region and the world at large.
