|Yang Jiechi Attends the 8th Meeting of the BRICS High Representatives for Security Issues|
On June 29, 2018, Member of the Political Bureau of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC) and Director of the Office of the Foreign Affairs Commission of the CPC Central Committee Yang Jiechi attended the 8th Meeting of the BRICS High Representatives for Security Issues in Durban, South Africa. The meeting focused on making political preparations for the BRICS Johannesburg Summit in July, and exchanged in-depth views and reached broad consensus on the international situation and regional hotspot issues as well as strengthening cooperation among the BRICS countries in such fields as peacekeeping operations, counter-terrorism and cyber security.
Yang Jiechi expressed that the current international situation has been undergoing unprecedented, complicated and profound changes. As an important force in safeguarding world peace, promoting common development, and strengthening global governance, the BRICS countries should further strengthen strategic mutual trust and practical cooperation and play a constructive role in safeguarding world peace and stability.
Yang Jiechi emphasized that the BRICS Xiamen Summit last year opened up the second "golden decade" for the BRICS cooperation. We should comprehensively implement the consensus of the leaders, firmly support multilateralism, safeguard the purposes and principles of the Charter of the United Nations, insist on peacefully resolving disputes through political means, strengthen political security cooperation, safeguard the common interests of emerging market economies and developing countries, and promote the building of a new type of international relations, in a bid to build a community with a shared future for mankind.
All parties expressed that the BRICS cooperation has witnessed broad consensus and fruitful outcomes over the past decade. Under the new situation, the BRICS countries should further strengthen unity and cooperation, jointly safeguard international rules, adhere to multilateralism, improve global governance, and effectively respond to traditional and non-traditional security challenges, so as to make positive contributions to promoting world peace, stability and development.
On the sidelines of the meeting, Yang Jiechi also respectively met with Head of the Russian delegation, Head of the South African delegation, Head of the Indian delegation and Head of the Brazilian delegation.
