Wang Yang Pays an Official Goodwill Visit to Kenya
2018-06-20

From June 16 to 19, 2018 local time, at the invitation of Speaker of the National Assembly of Kenya Justin Muturi, Chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) Wang Yang paid an official goodwill visit to Kenya where he met respectively with President Uhuru Kenyatta and Speaker of the Senate Kenneth Makelo Lusaka as well as held talks with Speaker of the National Assembly of Kenya Justin Muturi.

When meeting with Uhuru Kenyatta, Wang Yang first conveyed President Xi Jinping's warm greetings and best wishes. Wang Yang said that President Xi Jinping and Your Excellency President jointly lifted China-Kenya relations to comprehensive strategic cooperative partnership in May, 2017, charting the course for the future development of China-Kenya relations. I fully feel the vigorous development of Kenya's economic and social development and the strong momentum of China-Kenya friendly exchanges during the visit. China-Kenya cooperation has become a model of China-Africa cooperation. As this year marks the 55th anniversary of the establishment of China-Kenya diplomatic relations, both sides should further deepen bilateral political mutual trust, strengthen the alignment of development strategies, support each other more firmly on issues of major concern involving respective core interests, promote practical cooperation in broader areas and at higher levels, and intensify coordination and cooperation in international and regional affairs. New measures leading China-Africa cooperation in the new era will be announced at the Beijing Summit of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) in September this year, which will promote China and Africa to achieve win-win cooperation and common development at higher levels. Your Excellency President is welcome to attend the FOCAC Beijing Summit to jointly promote the undertakings of China-Africa friendship.

Uhuru Kenyatta asked Wang Yang to convey his sincere greetings and sound wishes to President Xi Jinping. He said that in recent years, Kenya and China have enjoyed close and solid political mutual trust. Kenya has actively participated in the construction of the Belt and Road, and gained substantial benefits from its cooperation with China. People of Kenya have gotten solid and tangible benefits. The Kenyan side firmly supports China in well hosting the FOCAC Beijing Summit, and stands ready to enhance high-level exchanges between both countries and well integrate the development strategies of both countries. Kenya welcomes China to expand cooperation in such fields as investment, economy and trade and tourism in the country, so as to develop an ever stronger Kenya-China comprehensive strategic cooperative partnership.

When holding talks with Justin Muturi, Wang Yang thanked the National Assembly of Kenya for inviting the CPPCC delegation. He said that Kenya is an important stop of my visit to Africa this time, and the aim of my visit to Kenya is to well implement the important consensus reached by the two heads of state and intensify exchanges and cooperation between the CPPCC and relevant bodies of Kenya. Wang Yang introduced the system of multiparty cooperation and political consultation under the leadership of the Communist Party of China (CPC), expecting the CPPCC and the National Assembly of Kenya to give full play to respective advantages in order to promote economic cooperation and people-to-people and cultural exchanges between both countries. Justin Muturi expressed that the National Assembly of Kenya staunchly supports the two countries in carrying out practical cooperation on an equal footing. He said that every country has the right to choose its own political system and development path, and that Kenya and China have always respected each other's choices of system and been real good friends and partners. The National Assembly of Kenya is willing to intensify exchanges with China's National People's Congress and the CPPCC, so as to make the exchanges a beneficial promotion for and supplement to Kenya-China relations.

When meeting with Kenneth Makelo Lusaka, Wang Yang noted that the CPC and the Jubilee Party of Kenya have both made grand blueprints for respective development and shouldered historical responsibilities to develop economy, improve people's livelihood and shake off poverty. Both parties should strengthen exchanges and mutual learning of experience in party-building to jointly improve cohesion and capability. The CPPCC is willing to, together with the Senate of Kenya, promote exchanges between both countries in economy, people-to-people and cultural engagement as well as at local level, in a bid to consolidate the public opinion and social foundation of China-Kenya friendship. Kenneth Makelo Lusaka highly appreciates the CPPCC's unique role in developing Kenya-China relations and Africa-China cooperation. The Jubilee Party stands ready to learn from the CPC's successful experience to improve its governance and leadership capabilities.

During his stay in Kenya, Wang Yang visited the Maramba Tea Factory, inspected the Mombasa-Nairobi Railway, Kenya's first modern railway co-built by China and Kenya, and the first China-Africa Joint Research Center, and held discussions respectively with representatives of Chinese-funded enterprises in Kenya as well as delegates from Chinese central media stationed in Kenya.

Vice Chairman and Secretary-General of the CPPCC National Committee Xia Baolong attended above activities.
