Wang Yang Pays an Official Goodwill Visit to Uganda

From June 13 to 16, 2018 local time, at the invitation of the Ugandan government, Chairman of the National Committee of the Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference (CPPCC) Wang Yang paid an official goodwill visit to Uganda where he met respectively with President Yoweri Museveni, Parliament Speaker Rebecca Alitwala Kadaga, and Vice President Edward Kiwanuka Ssekandi, as well as held talks with Prime Minister Ruhakana Rugunda.

When meeting with Yoweri Museveni, Wang Yang conveyed President Xi Jinping's warm greetings and best wishes, and expressed that President Xi Jinping and Your Excellency President have met with each other and exchanged letters for many times, charting the course for the future development of bilateral relations. Your Excellency President is welcome to attend the Beijing Summit of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) to be held this September. As the CPPCC Chairman, I visit Uganda for the first time with the aim of implementing the important consensus reached by the two heads of state and promoting the in-depth development of bilateral relations. Wang Yang expressed that at present, the Chinese people have been unremittingly striving for the two centenary goals under the guidance of Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era. The Ugandan side has been engaging in the realization of the Uganda Vision 2040. The two countries should strengthen the integration of development strategies, and carry out all-round cooperation under the FOCAC and the Belt and Road framework. China and Africa have been a community of shared future that goes through thick and thin together as well as a community of shared interests featuring win-win cooperation. China firmly supports various African countries including Uganda in exploring the development paths that suit their national conditions.

Yoweri Museveni asked Wang Yang to convey his warm greetings and best wishes to President Xi Jinping. He expressed that Uganda and China enjoy profound traditional friendship. The elder generations of leaders of China had always firmly stood with the Ugandan people in the process of anti-colonization and national independence of Uganda. President Xi Jinping put forward the ten major China-Africa cooperation plans, providing Uganda with new opportunities to realize national transformation and medium and long-term development. Yoweri Museveni is very satisfied with Uganda-China cooperation, and looks forward to jointly planning a bright future for Africa-China relations at the Beijing Summit with President Xi Jinping. After the meeting, Wang Yang and Yoweri Museveni jointly cut the ribbon at a commissioning ceremony for Uganda's first-ever national highway which was built by China Communications Construction Company Limited.

When meeting with Ruhakana Rugunda, Wang Yang expressed that as a good friend, good partner and good brother of Uganda, China is glad to see the remarkable achievements Uganda has made in its various construction causes which make it well deserve the title of "Pearl of Africa". China and Uganda maintain frequent high-level exchanges, constantly strengthen political mutual trust, and understand and support each other on issues concerning respective core interests and major concerns. China is glad to see Uganda play an important role in regional affairs. China and Uganda enjoy a robust momentum of practical cooperation in various areas and constant highlights in the aspects of investment and infrastructure construction. For the next step, both sides should deepen cooperation in such areas as construction of airports, roads and industrial parks, and agriculture, so as to lead the development of bilateral relations towards broader areas as well as higher levels.

Ruhakana Rugunda expressed that Uganda-China relations are friendly and robust. Uganda has benefited a lot from its cooperation with China. Uganda stands ready to continuously learn from the development experience of China to accelerate its economic transformation and social development.

When meeting with Rebecca Alitwala Kadaga and Edward Kiwanuka Ssekandi, Wang Yang expressed that the CPPCC is willing to establish long-term contact with the Parliament of Uganda, intensify experience exchanges in participating in the administration and discussion of state affairs, and encourage friendly exchanges at non-governmental and local level between both sides, so as to enhance the friendship between the two peoples. The Ugandan side spoke highly of the great achievements China has made in various undertakings since the 18th National Congress of the Communist Party of China, appreciated the Chinese people's selfless assistance to the African people and expressed the willingness to strengthen communication with the CPPCC to constantly consolidate the public opinion foundation of Uganda-China friendship. Wang Yang also exchanged in-depth views with Secretary General of the National Resistance Movement Justine Lumumba Kasule on strengthening cooperation in the field of poverty reduction.

During the visit, Wang Yang also visited and extended regards to the Chinese Medical Team in Uganda, visited the Liao Shen Industrial Park and the network operation center of the Uganda National Backbone Infrastructure as well as attended the opening ceremony of the second Dragon Boat Race Festival of Uganda.

Vice Chairman and Secretary-General of the CPPCC National Committee Xia Baolong attended the above activities.
