The Awarding Ceremony of the Friendship Medal of the People's Republic of China Grandly Held in Beijing Xi Jinping Awards President Vladimir Putin of Russia the First-ever Friendship Medal

The horn of peace sounds resonant in the east; and the long-lasting friendship has been carried forward. A grand awarding ceremony of the Friendship Medal of the People’s Republic of China was held at the Golden Hall of the Great Hall of the People on the afternoon of June 8, 2018. President Xi Jinping awarded President Vladimir Putin of Russia the first-ever Friendship Medal.

Member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC), Member of the Secretariat of the CPC Central Committee, Director of the Party and the Honour Commendation Committee of the State Wang Huning, Member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and Vice Premier Han Zheng attended the awarding ceremony.

The Golden Hall of the Great Hall of the People was beautifully lit, and the atmosphere was warm and solemn. A large red backdrop had a picture of the golden Friendship Medal on it. The words “Awarding Ceremony of the ‘Friendship Medal’ of the People’s Republic of China” written on the backdrop in both Chinese and Russian were quite eye-catching. National flags of China and Russia were arranged orderly in front of the backdrop.

At around 5:55 p.m., 18 honor guards of the three services marched into the hall with sonorous and forceful steps, and stood on both sides of the awarding stage. The awarding ceremony then started.

Xi Jinping and Vladimir Putin walked into the Golden Hall of the Great Hall of the People side by side along with the majestic ceremonial music. All the audience stood up and welcomed the two presidents with eye salute, and the hall burst into warm applause.

The two heads of state stepped onto the stage. All the audience stood up as a mark of respect and sang the national anthem of the People’s Republic of China along with the accompaniment.

Xi Jinping delivered his speech amid the warm applause.

Xi Jinping pointed out that the Friendship Medal of the People’s Republic of China is the highest state honor presented to foreign friends who have made outstanding contributions to China’s modernization construction, promoting exchanges and cooperation between China and the world, and safeguarding world peace. As a leader of major country with global influence, President Vladimir Putin is an old and good friend of the Chinese people. Thanks to the great importance and personal promotion of President Vladimir Putin, China-Russia relations have withstood the test of ever-changing international situation, with political and strategic mutual trust being constantly deepened, practical cooperation in various fields making substantial progress, and friendship between the two peoples being constantly deepened. The China-Russia relations, standing at a high level, have benefited the two peoples and served as a model of harmonious coexistence of major countries and neighboring countries in the world today. Such relations have made important contributions to the building of a new type of international relations and a community with a shared future for mankind.

Xi Jinping stressed that this precious Friendship Medal not only represents the great respect of the Chinese people to President Vladimir Putin, but also symbolizes the profound friendship between the two great nations, namely, China and Russia. Starting at the new point, I am willing to continuously work with President Vladimir Putin to adhere to the principles of good-neighborliness and friendliness, strategic coordination, and win-win cooperation, so as to jointly lead China-Russia relations to an even brighter future.

Afterwards, Wang Huning read out the President Order of Award: According to the Law of the People’s Republic of China on National Medals and National Honorary Titles, the Friendship Medal of the People’s Republic of China is awarded to President Vladimir Vladimirovich Putin of the Russian Federation, as recognition of President Vladimir Putin’s long-standing devotion to promoting good-neighborliness and friendliness and the development of the comprehensive strategic partnership of coordination between China and Russia as well as his important contributions to this end.

Escorted by two national flag guards, an honor guard holding in both hands a tray with the Friendship Medal of the People’s Republic of China on it marched to the stage. The golden medal was shining brightly.

The ceremonial horn rang through the Golden Hall. Xi Jinping, in a solemn manner, wore the medal on the chest of Vladimir Putin. The two heads of state shook hands warmly. The hall burst into warm applause once again.

The military band played the national anthem of the Russian Federation.

Vladimir Putin made a speech in reply. In his speech, Vladimir Putin expressed that he was very grateful to President Xi Jinping for awarding the first-ever Friendship Medal of the People’s Republic of China to him. He felt greatly honored. This is not only the highest honor given to himself, but also embodies the high level of Russia-China comprehensive strategic partnership of coordination as well as the deep affection and profound friendship of the Chinese people to Russian people. Russia cherishes Russia-China comprehensive strategic partnership of coordination. The solid foundation of bilateral strategic cooperation is the friendship between the two heads of state and the feelings between the two peoples. He will treasure this meaningful medal, and is willing to make joint efforts with President Xi Jinping to be committed to the prosperity of Russia and China.

Member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee, Member of the Secretariat of the CPC Central Committee and Director of the General Office of the CPC Central Committee Ding Xuexiang; Member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and Vice Chairman of the Standing Committee of the National People’s Congress Wang Chen; Member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and Vice Premier Sun Chunlan; Member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and Director of the Office of the Central Commission for Foreign Affairs Yang Jiechi; Member of the Political Bureau of the CPC Central Committee and Vice Premier Hu Chunhua; State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi; State Councilor and Secretary-General of the State Council Xiao Jie; and Vice Chairmen of the National Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference Zhang Qingli, Bagatur, and He Lifeng also attended the awarding ceremony. More than 700 people, including friendly personages from all walks of life in China and Russia who have made contributions to China-Russia relations, representatives of elderly anti-fascist fighters or their descendants, youth representatives from China and Russia, and diplomats of the Russian Embassy in China, attended the awarding ceremony.
