|Wang Yi Meets with Executive Secretary of the UN ESCAP Shamshad Akhtar|
On May 28, 2018, State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi met with Under Secretary-General of the United Nations (UN) and Executive Secretary of UN Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) Shamshad Akhtar in Beijing.
Wang Yi highly affirmed the cooperation between the UN and China, especially between the ESCAP and China, and proposed the outlook for the future cooperation between the two sides.Wang Yi expressed that Asia Pacific is the region with the greatest potential and the best momentum for development in the world. The "Belt and Road" initiative proposed by President Xi Jinping is highly consistent with the UN 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, and in line with the work of the ESCAP in promoting connectivity and regional economic integration.The "Belt and Road" construction has been in full swing, with great potential and space for development. It is hoped that the ESCAP will give play to its advantages, combine its own work more closely with the "Belt and Road", and join hands with China to promote Asia-Pacific economic cooperation and integration process, so as to inject new impetus into regional economic and social development.
Shamshad Akhtar thanked the Chinese side for providing strong support for the UN and the ESCAP, and expressed that the ESCAP will fully play its role as an intergovernmental platform and participate in the "Belt and Road" construction in an all-around and in-depth manner, in a bid to make contributions to the development and prosperity of the Asia-Pacific region and the implementation of the UN 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.
