Wang Yi Talks About Resumption of Diplomatic Relations Between China and Burkina Faso
2018-05-26

On the afternoon of May 26, 2018, State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi and Foreign Minister Alpha Barry of Burkina Faso held talks and signed the Joint Communiqué on Resumption of Diplomatic Relations Between the People's Republic of China and Burkina Faso in Beijing.

Wang Yi said that Foreign Minister Alpha Barry and I jointly signed the Joint Communiqué on Resumption of Diplomatic Relations Between the People's Republic of China and Burkina Faso. The government of Burkina Faso recognizes in the joint communiqué that there is but one China in the world, that the government of the People's Republic of China is the sole legal government representing the whole of China, and that Taiwan is an inalienable part of China's territory. The Chinese side highly appreciates the government of Burkina Faso for complying with the trend of the times and making the right political decisions.

Wang Yi pointed out that the one-China principle is a widely-acknowledged basic norm of international relations, a universal consensus in the international community and a fundamental prerequisite as well as political foundation for China to develop relations with any other country. For some time, Gambia, Sao Tome and Principe, Panama and the Dominican Republic have established or resumed diplomatic relations with China in succession. China's friend circle becomes bigger and bigger and China has more and more good partners around the world. The facts have proved that it is the popular sentiment and the trend of the times to stick to the one-China principle. Any attempt to split China and any countercurrent that impedes the progress of history is futile and doomed to failure.

Wang Yi expressed that the resumption of diplomatic relations between China and Burkina Faso has been expected by the two peoples for a long time, and it has opened a new chapter for bilateral relations. President Xi Jinping welcomed President Roch Marc Christian Kabore to attend the Beijing Summit of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) in China this September. President Roch Marc Christian Kabore expressed the expectation to attend the Summit and jointly discuss the undertakings of China-Burkina Faso and China-Africa friendly cooperation with President Xi Jinping. It is believed that the meeting between the two heads of state at the scheduled time will map out a new blueprint for the development of bilateral relations.

As the diplomatic relations between China and Burkina Faso have been resumed, the two countries are ready to cooperate with each other to make up for the lost two decades or so. Foreign Minister Alpha Barry and I conducted in-depth exchange of views on China-Burkina Faso relations and cooperation after the resumption of diplomatic relations. We both agreed to make joint efforts to constantly improve political mutual trust and comprehensively promote friendly exchanges and practical cooperation in all fields, so as to bring tangible well-being to the two peoples.

Chinese people and African people were looking forward to the resumption of diplomatic relations between China and Burkina Faso. Now another new and important member has joined the big family of China-Africa friendship. Both China and Africa have been looking forward to realizing the "great reunion" and taking a "family photo" at an early date. Today we have taken a step closer towards this goal. Now there is only one country in Africa that has not established diplomatic relations with China. China sincerely hopes that this country can join the big family of China-Africa friendship at an early date. I believe that all our African brothers will firmly stand with China in the historical process of realizing China's complete national reunification. Meanwhile, China is willing to be a sincere friend of all African countries along the path to the development and prosperity of the African continent.

Wang Yi pointed out that the FOCAC Beijing Summit will be ceremoniously held in three months, and it will be a historic event for strengthening unity and cooperation between China and Africa. In the joint construction of the "Belt and Road", China and Africa are dedicated to win-win cooperation and common development and building a closer community with a shared future between China and Africa in the new era, which will certainly bring new vitality and vigor to this world where we live.

Alpha Barry said that today is historic and solemn and that the resumption of diplomatic relations between Burkina Faso and China is completely in line with the will and benefits of the people of Burkina Faso. Burkina Faso recognizes the one-China principle, and that the government of the People's Republic of China is the sole legal government representing the whole of China, and that Taiwan is an inalienable part of China's territory. Burkina Faso has already severed the so-called "diplomatic relations" with Taiwan and will have neither official relations nor official exchanges with Taiwan. Burkina Faso admires the great achievements of China's development and highly appreciates China's important international status. Burkina Faso hopes to establish a closer partnership with China and carry out cooperation in a wide range of fields, such as politics, economy, society and people-to-people and cultural engagement, so as to facilitate its own development and contribute to the cooperation between African countries and China. President Roch Marc Christian Kabore will attend the FOCAC Summit to be held in Beijing in September.
