The People's Republic of China and Burkina Faso Resume Diplomatic Relations
2018-05-26

On the afternoon of May 26, 2018, State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi and Foreign Minister Alpha Barry of Burkina Faso signed the Joint Communiqué on Resumption of Diplomatic Relations Between the People's Republic of China and Burkina Faso in Beijing. The main contents are as follows:

The People's Republic of China and Burkina Faso, in keeping with the interests and desire of the two peoples, have decided to resume diplomatic relations at the ambassadorial level as of this day.

The two governments agree to develop friendly relations between the two countries based on the principles of mutual respect for sovereignty and territorial integrity, mutual non-aggression, non-interference in each other's internal affairs, equality, mutual benefit and peaceful coexistence.

The Government of Burkina Faso recognizes that there is but one China in the world, that the Government of the People's Republic of China is the sole legal government representing the whole of China, and that Taiwan is an inalienable part of China's territory. Burkina Faso promises it will have neither official relations nor official exchanges with Taiwan.

Prior to the signing of the Joint Communiqué on the Resumption of China-Burkina Faso Diplomatic Relations in Beijing, the Government of Burkina Faso issued a statement on severing the so-called "diplomatic relations" with Taiwan on May 24.
