|Wang Yi Urges the US to Abide by the One-China Principle|
On May 23, 2018 local time, State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi, who made a stop-over in Washington, D.C. on his way back from Argentina, held a meeting with Secretary of State Mike Pompeo of the United States (US). Both sides jointly met the press after their talks.
A journalist asked that the US has conducted a series of negative actions on the Taiwan-related issues recently. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo was asked whether there is any change of the US on the "one-China" policy. State Councilor Wang Yi was asked about his views in this regard.
Mike Pompeo expressed that there is not any change of the US on the "one-China" policy. The policy of the US on this issue has been consistent.
Wang Yi expressed that the question asked by the journalist reflected the concerns of all circles of the Chinese society for the policy of the US towards Taiwan. I have noted that Secretary of State Mike Pompeo just now had made it clear that there was not any change of the US on the "one-China" policy. What I want to stress is that the Taiwan question touches upon China's sovereignty and territorial integrity, and involves China's core interests. We urge the US to abide by the one-China principle and regulations in the three joint communiqués between China and the US, and handle the Taiwan-related issues in a practical, prudent and proper manner, in a bid to maintain the overall situation of China-US relations as well as peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait.
