2018-05-22

On May 21, 2018 local time, State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi attended the G20 Foreign Ministers' Meeting in Buenos Aires.

Wang Yi said that the establishment and development of G20 are new embodiments of multilateralism and important progress of global governance reform. On the occasion of the 10th anniversary of the launch of the G20 summit mechanism, it is of important significance to discuss issues of multilateralism and global governance. At present, economic globalization has encountered headwinds, and unilateralism and protectionism are on the rise. To decide on which path all parties should follow is a question of the era that must be answered. History has proved from both the positive and negative sides that upholding multilateralism, improving global governance, and building a community of common interests conform to the trend of the times and the common interests of all countries. We should build a new type of international relations with the aim of win-win cooperation. We should solve problems through equal consultation according to international law and international rules. We should jointly build a community with a shared future for mankind with the support of multilateral mechanism. We should improve global governance system under the guidance of reform. China fully supports Argentina in hosting a successful summit, and releasing clear information on safeguarding multilateralism to lead the economic globalization to develop in a correct direction, and promote the G20 for positive progress in boosting world economic growth and strengthening global economic governance.

Wang Yi pointed out that many problems facing the world nowadays are ultimately related to development issues. The G20 is responsible for creating more opportunities for developing countries by boosting the world economic growth, and providing more support for developing countries through enhancing international development cooperation. We should continue placing the development issues on a prominent position of global macro policy coordination, always take care of the concerns of developing countries, and make sure that developing countries can gain benefits. We should well implement the United Nations development agendas, safeguard the policy space where developing countries can seek for development, and seize the new opportunities to achieve development, in order to provide new impetus for developing countries to eliminate poverty, break bottleneck and achieve development.

Wang Yi expressed that this year marks the 40th anniversary of China's reform and opening up. Over the past 40 years, China has lifted 700 million people out of poverty, making important contributions to the cause of global development. We will adhere to reform, expand opening up, implement the people-oriented development concept, and always act as a builder of world peace, a contributor to global development and a defender of international order. China will strive to make more contributions to the cause of the common development of mankind while realizing its own development.

The G20 Summit this year will be held in Buenos Aires, the capital of Argentina in November. This Foreign Ministers' Meeting was held to make preparations for the summit in November.
