|Prime Minister Antonio Costa of Portugal Meets with Wang Yi|
On May 18, 2018 local time, Prime Minister Antonio Costa of Portugal met at the Prime Minister's Office in Lisbon with State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi.
Antonio Costa asked Wang Yi to convey warm greetings to Chinese leaders. He expressed that Portugal and China enjoy close political relations, and high-level mutual trust as well as fruitful cooperation in economy and trade, energy, culture, education and other areas, setting an example of mutually beneficial cooperation for different countries. Attaching high importance to China, Portugal appreciates the important role China has played in many major international issues. The country speaks highly of the "Belt and Road" initiative of China, and regards China as a prior cooperative partner. The Portuguese side eagerly looks forward to the visit of Chinese leaders, and hopes to ensure the main points and highlights of future cooperation through high-level visits, so as to promote bilateral relations to new highs. Portugal is willing to give play to its own unique advantages and join China in expanding the third-party market cooperation in Latin America and Africa and other regions as well as carry out cooperation in ocean. It is hoped that both sides can further enhance communication and cooperation in multilateral occasions.
Wang Yi conveyed greetings from Chinese leaders to Antonio Costa. Wang Yi expressed that China and Portugal are comprehensive strategic partners. China sees Portugal as a reliable and good friend in European Union (EU) countries, and appreciates Portugal's positive and constructive role in promoting the sound development of China-EU relations. Next year marks the 40th anniversary of the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Portugal, and is an important time coordinate for the development of relations between the two countries. China is willing to, together with Portugal, intensify communication, jointly sum up the past experience and better plan the future blueprint through well planning and preparing for bilateral high-level visits, so as to lay a more solid foundation for the further development of bilateral relations and open up broader prospects. China appreciates Portugal's consistent and active support for and response to the "Belt and Road" initiative. Portugal is a converging area of the Silk Road Economic Belt and the Maritime Silk Road, and a natural cooperative partner for the joint construction of the "Belt and Road". The two countries can totally become forerunners of the joint construction of the "Belt and Road", and continuously expand the third-party market cooperation within this framework.
