President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa of Portugal Meets with Wang Yi

On May 18, 2018 local time, President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa of Portugal met with visiting State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi in Lisbon.

Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa asked Wang Yi to convey his warmest greetings to President Xi Jinping. Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa said that Portugal attaches great importance to China, and the Portuguese side has always considered itself the country with the best understanding of China in Europe. Conducting cooperation with China has always been the unanimous consensus of the public and administration of Portugal. Portugal-China relations have enjoyed pretty sound development, and in recent years, the economic cooperation between the two countries has achieved a qualitative leap, which is unique among European countries. Portugal and China have profound friendship support as well as a common vision to strengthen mutually beneficial cooperation. The Portuguese side is willing to constantly move forward hand in hand with China on the road of mutually beneficial cooperation.

Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa said that the Portuguese side has been firmly supporting the significant initiative of the joint construction of the "Belt and Road" proposed by President Xi Jinping from the very beginning. Portugal has the best natural harbor in Europe and is willing to take this as an advantage to strengthen cooperation with China to jointly promote the "Belt and Road" construction. The Portuguese side fully holds an open attitude towards investment and cooperation with the Chinese side, and welcomes as well as expects Chinese companies to further increase investment in various fields in Portugal, especially in such strategic industries as finance, energy, transportation, ports, and electric vehicles. The Portuguese side is also willing to strengthen the third-party market cooperation with the Chinese side, which could begin with specific projects in Portuguese-speaking countries in Africa and Latin America.

Wang Yi conveyed President Xi Jinping's sincere greetings to President Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa. Wang Yi said that Portugal is an important country in Europe. Portugal has a long-standing history and culture, and enjoys superior geographical position and great development potential. The Chinese side is willing to regard Portugal as an important cooperative partner for the joint construction of the "Belt and Road", and negotiate and sign a memorandum of understanding on cooperation as soon as possible. China stands ready to, by aligning the development strategies of both sides, expand new areas, tap into new potential and open up new space for mutually beneficial cooperation between the two countries.

Wang Yi said that the Portuguese side has always held an open and inclusive attitude towards China's investment, for which the Chinese side highly appreciates. China is willing to make joint efforts with the Portuguese side and constantly improve the scale and level of mutual investment between the two sides, so as to forge China-Portugal investment and cooperation into an example and model for country-to-country cooperation and achieve efficient, orderly and lasting mutual benefit and win-win results. The Chinese side is willing to strengthen cooperation with the Portuguese side in key areas of its concern including ocean and ports, and actively discuss specific ways and projects for carrying out the third-party cooperation.
