Wang Yi Talks About Three Important Consensus Reached During His Visit to Europe
2018-05-19

On May 18, 2018 local time, State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi and Foreign Minister Augusto Santos Silva of Portugal jointly met the press after their talk in Lisbon. Wang Yi talked about the three important consensus reached during his visits to three European countries at inquiry.

Wang Yi expressed that I have visited three European countries this time, namely, France, Spain, and Portugal. This is the first visit to Europe paid by Chinese Foreign Minister after the establishment of the new Chinese government and coincides with the 15th anniversary of the establishment of the China-European Union (EU) comprehensive strategic partnership. This visit sends out a clear signal to the outside that the Chinese side will continue to attach great importance to its relations with the EU and is willing to take the 15th anniversary as an opportunity to strengthen cooperation with European countries comprehensively so as to push the China-EU comprehensive strategic partnership for new progress and elevate it to new stages.

Wang Yi said that all three European countries I visited this time are of great representativeness and I have reached a lot of important consensus with foreign ministers and leaders of the three countries. The first important consensus is that under the new international situation and historical background, both China and the EU will continue to regard each other as an opportunity for their own development rather than as a threat, make the other side a priority in respective foreign policies and treat each other as an important cooperative partner in strengthening mutually beneficial cooperation and achieving common development.

The second important consensus is that with the deepening of mutual understanding, more and more European countries understand, welcome and support the joint construction of the "Belt and Road" initiative proposed by China and are willing to discuss with China the concrete ways and projects of conducting cooperation. It is believed that the joint promotion of the "Belt and Road" construction between China and the EU will open up new prospects for China-EU practical cooperation and will also inject new impetus into the recovery and growth of the world economy.

The third important consensus is that facing the current international situation full of uncertainties, both China and Europe are stabilizing forces. Both sides should strengthen coordination and cooperation with each other to jointly safeguard the process of multilateralism, safeguard the sound development of the economic globalization, maintain the existing international order and system, and safeguard the global free trade system with the rules of the World Trade Organization at the core. This is of positive significance in enhancing China-EU mutually beneficial cooperation, and safeguarding the common interests of the two sides as well as the peace, stability, and development of the world.
