On May 18, 2018 local time, State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi held talks with Foreign Minister Augusto Santos Silva of Portugal in Lisbon.

Wang Yi expressed that Portugal is a trustworthy and good friend of China in the European Union. Since the establishment of diplomatic relations between China and Portugal nearly four decades ago, both sides have always enjoyed mutual respect, mutual understanding, mutual trust, and mutual support, as well as respected and accommodated each other's core interests and major concerns, becoming a model of mutual learning and win-win cooperation between China and European countries as well as between the Eastern and Western civilizations. China pays high attention to China-Portugal relations, and stands ready to, together with Portugal, enhance high-level exchanges, align the "Belt and Road" initiative with the development strategy of Portugal, give play to respective advantages, and strengthen cooperation in such fields as trade, investment, energy and finance, making a sample for country-to-country investment and cooperation. At the same time, both sides should tap into new cooperation potential, expand maritime cooperation, and be forerunners of establishing the "blue partnership", in a bid to inject new epochal connotation and strong impetus into bilateral relations. Both sides should continue well utilizing the Forum for Economic and Trade Cooperation between China and Portuguese-speaking Countries, expand third-party market cooperation in Africa, Latin America and other regions, and reinforce communication and coordination in international and regional affairs. China is firmly committed to the further reform and opening up. Facing the current international situation which is full of uncertainties and instabilities, both sides are obliged to join hands to jointly promote the process of multilateralism, safeguard global free trade and investment system, and make concerted efforts to build an open world economy.

Augusto Santos Silva noted that Portugal and China enjoy a very sound relationship. In spite of different national conditions, the two countries have common interests and stance on promoting globalization, safeguarding multilateral mechanisms and advocating the settlement of conflicts and differences through dialogues. Portugal firmly upholds the one-China policy, and supports the rightful position of China in safeguarding sovereignty and territorial integrity. China's investment is reliable and has played an important role in increasing job opportunities and promoting economic development of Portugal. The "Belt and Road" is a major initiative with a bright future, which is of important significance in promoting regional connectivity and achieving common development and prosperity. Portugal is willing to, together with China, further enhance investment and cooperation, conduct the "Belt and Road" cooperation in a more positive manner, and continue utilizing the Forum for Economic and Trade Cooperation between Portuguese-speaking Countries and China at the same time to push bilateral exchanges and cooperation in such fields as economy, trade, education and culture to achieve more tangible results.
