On February 8, 2018, Foreign Minister Wang Yi jointly met the press with visiting Chairman of the African Union (AU) Commission Moussa Faki Mahamat after holding the 7th China-AU Strategic Dialogue.
Wang Yi said that Chairman Moussa Faki Mahamat and I had just co-chaired the 7th China-AU Strategic Dialogue which has achieved fruitful results and reached broad consensus. We believe that China-Africa relations have maintained high-level development for a long period of time, which has become a good example for the unity and cooperation between China and other developing countries. China and Africa are a community of shard future meeting challenges together and sharing weal and woe and treating each other sincerely, as well as a community of shared interests featuring mutual benefit and win-win results and common development. The Chinese side firmly believes that in the multi-polar world of the future, Africa is totally qualified to be an important polar. In the historic process during which Africa stands up and becomes stronger, China is willing to be the most reliable and firm strategic partner of Africa.
Wang Yi expressed that the Chinese side highly appreciates the important role of the AU in promoting Africa’s unity and self-improvement as well as the integration process. China will continue supporting the AU to actively implement Agenda 2063 by internally advancing the institutional reform of the AU and externally coordinating Africa to speak with one voice, as well as continue supporting the AU’s leading role in the cause of peace and development of Africa.
Wang Yi stated that Chairman Moussa Faki Mahamat and I both agreed that China and the AU should carry out all-around, wide-ranging and multi-level cooperation. The two sides will strengthen strategic communication, hold annual strategic dialogues regularly, improve and enrich dialogue and consultation mechanism, consolidate and deepen political mutual trust and continuously understand and support each other on issues concerning respective core interests and major concerns. Both sides agreed to explore and expand the overall cooperation between China and the AU on the basis of not affecting or replacing the effective bilateral cooperation between China and African countries. The two sides agreed to give full play to the unique advantages of the AU Commission, and focus on the transnational and trans-regional coordination and cooperation which go beyond the bilateral channel. In this regard, the two sides have determined five key cooperation fields including the capacity building of the AU, infrastructure construction of Africa, the cause of peace and security, public health and disease prevention and treatment as well as tourism and aviation network construction, so as to usher in a new stage for China-AU cooperation and enhance the strategic significance, demonstrative meaning and effectiveness of China-AU relations.
Wang Yi expressed that we also made in-depth exchanges of views on international and regional issues of common concern including relevant hotspot issues in Africa, counter-terrorism, poverty reduction and development. Both sides believed that China and the AU should speak in one voice on international stage, and coordinate common positions to safeguard the common interests of China, Africa and developing countries.
Wang Yi also announced two pieces of good news for China-Africa Cooperation. First, China agrees to establish the AU representative office in China, stands ready to provide assistance to this end and expects to see the opening of the office at an early date. It is believed that the establishment of the office will play a special and positive role in promoting the overall development of relations between China and Africa and deepening mutually beneficial cooperation between the two sides. Second, both sides will hold the Beijing Summit of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation (FOCAC) this September in Beijing. We welcome Chairman Moussa Faki Mahamat to come to China to attend the Summit at the scheduled time. Chairman Moussa Faki Mahamat was pleased to accept the invitation and wished the Summit a success. China is willing to, together with the AU Commission and all the African member states of the FOCAC, make the Summit a historic event to strengthen China-Africa unity and friendship based on the principle of extensive consultation, joint contribution and shared benefits.
