|Wang Yi: BRICS Countries Should Confidently Uphold High the Banner of Multilateralism|
On September 21, 2017 local time, during his attendance at the Meeting of BRICS Ministers of Foreign Affairs on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly, Foreign Minister Wang Yi highlighted that multilateralism is the choice of history, demand of reality and direction of the future. Unilateralism does not work. Unilateral sanctions lose popularity and unilaterally using force is very dangerous. BRICS countries should confidently uphold high the banner of multilateralism and unswervingly promote multilateralism cause.
Wang Yi pointed out that BRICS countries should firmly preserve the international system with the UN at its core and the central role of the UN in the international affairs. Presently, the occurrence of many international issues is attributed to failing to observe the UN Charter. BRICS countries should push all sides to follow the basic principles of the UN Charter such as equal sovereignty, non-interference in domestic affairs and peaceful settlement of disputes, give full play to the important role of the protection mechanism of war termination and peacekeeping established by the UN Charter and constantly enhance the UN Security Council's primary obligations in maintaining international peace and security.
Wang Yi expressed that in recent years, regular meeting mechanism such as high representative for security affairs, Foreign Ministers and permanent representatives has been established among the five countries. No matter in the UN or the G20, New York, Geneva or Vienna, on the issue of politics or development or human rights, the five countries can send out the BRICS voice. We should make good use of these mechanisms to keep regular coordination, and discuss on putting forward "BRICS measures" and taking "BRICS actions" on major international and regional issues, so as to constantly improve the discourse power and influence of BRICS countries and continuously strengthen the power of safeguarding peace and development.
