|Wang Yi: LMC Should not Be a Superb Talking Shop but a Grounded Bulldozer|
On July 24, 2017 local time, when jointly meeting the press with Foreign Minister Don Pramudwinai of Thailand in Bangkok, Foreign Minister Wang Yi expressed that the Lancang-Mekong Cooperation (LMC) should not be a superb talking shop, but a grounded bulldozer. China hopes to, together with Thailand and other Mekong River countries, continuously ensure the LMC is under operation.
Wang Yi said that the LMC is a new type of sub-regional cooperation mechanism jointly launched by the six countries along the Lancang-Mekong River. Compared with other Mekong River cooperation mechanisms, the LMC better meets the six countries’ practical needs, pays more attention to the advancement of specific projects and better embodies relevant countries’ wish of equality, mutual assistance and win-win cooperation. The LMC has enjoyed rapid development since its launching last March, which showcases the "Lancang-Mekong speed" and the "Lancang-Mekong efficiency". Meanwhile, various countries also cultivated a Lancang-Mekong culture featuring equal treatment, sincerity, mutual assistance and family-like closeness, which provides cooperation with enduring impetus and support.
Wang Yi said that in the next phase, all parties involved in the LMC should well do the following jobs: first, hold the third Foreign Ministers' meeting within this year to make preparations in advance for the second LMC Leaders' Meeting; second, on the basis of the national secretariats and coordination mechanisms established by the six countries, ensure the six joint working groups will all be set up within this year; third, strive to complete all early harvest projects or make them obtain substantial achievements; fourth, well make a five-year action plan, and submit it to the second LMC Leaders’ Meeting for deliberation and endorsement.
Wang Yi expressed that China hopes to, together with Thailand and other Mekong River countries, on the basis of observing laws and regulations of various countries, push forward the LMC for new progress every day, new outcomes every month and new levels every year, strive to forge the LMC an example of regional cooperation and South-South cooperation, and make unique contributions to building a community of common destiny for Asia.
