Xi Jinping Meets with President Moon Jae-in of the ROK

On July 6, 2017, local time, President Xi Jinping met in Berlin with President Moon Jae-in of the Republic of Korea (ROK).

Xi Jinping pointed out that China and the ROK are geographically and culturally close to each other and enjoy strong complementarities. Since the establishment of diplomatic relations 25 years ago, China and the ROK, by upholding the spirit of the Joint Communiqué on the establishment of diplomatic relations and the principles of mutual understanding and mutual respect, have promoted China-ROK relations for leapfrog development, which has generated substantial benefits to the two countries and their peoples and made significant contributions to regional peace, stability and prosperity.

Xi Jinping stressed that I greatly appreciate President Moon Jae-in for sending the ROK government delegation to attend the Belt and Road Forum for International Cooperation and sending a special envoy to deliver a signed letter to express the active willingness to improve and develop China-ROK relations and properly address sensitive issues. China-ROK relations have encountered some difficulties for quite a while, which is what we don’t expect to see. China values the ROK and China-ROK relations and China’s stance of being committed to developing China-ROK friendship remains unchanged. China hopes to take the opportunity of the 25th anniversary of diplomatic relations between China and the ROK to conscientiously review and summarize experience and lessons with the ROK since the establishment of diplomatic relations, remain faithful to the original aspiration and march forward hand in hand, so as to steer China-ROK relations back on the right track of healthy and stable development. It is our mutual responsibility to well maintain and develop China-ROK relations. The two sides should proceed from the overall situation and long-term perspective, and respect each other’s core interests and major concerns. It is hoped that the ROK will pay attention to China’s legitimate concerns, properly handle relevant issues and strive to pave the way for improving and developing China-ROK relations.

Moon Jae-in expressed that the ROK attaches great importance to its relationship with China. With a long history of exchanges, the ROK and China share extensive mutual interests and have become important partners. He has been actively conducting sound interactions with China since he assumed office as the President of the ROK. The ROK also greatly appreciates the assistance of the Chinese enterprises in salvaging the Sewol ferry. The ROK is willing to work with China to strengthen high-level exchanges and cooperation in various fields and build ROK-China relations into a substantive strategic partnership. He fully understands China’s relevant concerns and wishes to have an in-depth communication with China.

The two heads of states also exchanged views on the situation of the Korean Peninsula. Xi Jinping noted that China is committed to upholding the denuclearization of the peninsula, adhering to peace and stability in the peninsula, and sticking to the settlement of the issue through dialogue and consultation. China encourages all parties concerned to strictly abide by the relevant resolutions of the UN Security Council. China supports the new ROK administration’s active endeavor to resume contacts and dialogues and improve the relations with the Democratic People's Republic of Korea. The international community should make concerted efforts to play a positive role in easing the tension in the peninsula.

Moon Jae-in said that the ROK speaks positively of the efforts made by China to properly settle the nuclear issue on the Korean Peninsula and agrees to try to solve the issue through dialogue and consultation. The ROK hopes to intensify coordination and cooperation with China on realizing the denuclearization of the peninsula and safeguarding peace and stability in the region.

Wang Huning, Li Zhanshu, Yang Jiechi and others attended the meeting.
