|Wang Yi Talks about the Establishment of Diplomatic Relations Between China and Panama|
On June 13, 2017, Foreign Minister Wang Yi and Vice President and Foreign Minister Isabel Saint Malo de Alvarado of Panama jointly met the press after their talks in Beijing.
Wang Yi said that I and Vice President and Foreign Minister Isabel Saint Malo de Alvarado have just signed the Joint Communique on the Establishment of Diplomatic Relations Between the People's Republic of China and the Republic of Panama, in which the Republic of Panama recognizes that there is but one China in the world, the Government of the People's Republic of China is the sole legal government representing the whole of China, and Taiwan is an inalienable part of China's territory. The government of the Republic of Panama severs "diplomatic relations" with Taiwan as of this day and undertakes not to have any more official relations or official exchanges with Taiwan.
Wang Yi pointed out that hereby, the People's Republic of China and the Republic of Panama decided to recognize each other and establish diplomatic relations from the day of the signing of the joint communique. This is a historic moment, which ushers in a new chapter for bilateral relations.
Wang Yi expressed that Panama is an important Latin American country, and the Chinese people value the traditional friendship with the Panamanian people. The important political decision made by President Juan Carlos Varela and the Panamanian government completely conforms to the fundamental interests of the country and the nation, fully conforms to the trend of the progress of times, and totally accords with the one-China pattern formed in international community. The Chinese government and the people highly appraise and warmly welcome this.
Wang Yi pointed out that I just held sincere, friendly and fruitful talks with Vice President and Foreign Minister Isabel Saint Malo de Alvarado.
We agree that the one-China policy is the fundamental premise and political basis of the establishment of bilateral diplomatic relations and the development of China-Panama relations, which should always and unswervingly be upheld.
We both believe that the establishment of bilateral diplomatic relations will open up broad prospects for expanding bilateral comprehensive mutually beneficial cooperation.
Both sides will conduct friendly exchanges at all levels and in various fields, and deepen political mutual trust.
Both sides will take common development and prosperity as the goal, make full use of complementary advantages, and carry out cooperation in wide areas, such as trade, investment, maritime affairs, culture, education and tourism, in a bid to benefit the two countries and the two peoples. China welcomes Panama to actively participate in the "Belt and Road" construction.
Both sides will communicate and coordinate in international and regional affairs, deepen China-Latin America friendly cooperation as well as between China and the Caribbean, safeguard the common interests of developing countries, and promote world peace, stability and development.
Wang Yi pointed out that over 160 years ago, overcoming difficulties and hardship, the ship carrying the first batch of Chinese people arrived in Panama, a country on the other side of the Pacific, initiating the history of bilateral exchanges over a century of vicissitudes. Today, after more than 160 years, the ship of China-Panama friendship, after wind and rain as well as twists and turns, sails in the right lane and marches towards a new journey. I believe that under joint efforts of both sides, China-Panama relations will surely embrace a bright future.
