Singapore Will Fully Support and Participate in the "Belt and Road" Construction
2017-06-12

On June 12, 2017, when jointly meeting the press with Foreign Minister Wang Yi, the visiting Foreign Minister Vivian Balakrishnan of Singapore answered questions on Singapore’s participation in the “Belt and Road” construction from Chinese media.

Vivian Balakrishnan expressed that the “Belt and Road” initiative is of historical significance, and Singapore has fully supported it since the very beginning. The Singaporean side believes that the “Belt and Road” initiative will provide support that desperately needed in all Asian countries in infrastructure construction and connectivity, connect countries in Asia, Europe and Oceania together, and ultimately bring peace and prosperity to people in the whole world. With unique geographical location, Singapore is an important site along the “Belt and Road”. Relying on the status as a regional financial center, the country can provide support for the financing needs of the “Belt and Road”, and can also align maritime and overland silk roads through bilateral connectivity projects in Chongqing. Singapore is willing to make joint efforts with China to better align respective economic development strategies and benefit the two countries and the two peoples.

Wang Yi noted that China welcomes Singapore to actively support and participate in the “Belt and Road” construction. With its unique geographical location, Singapore can absolutely play an important role in the process of the joint construction of the “Belt and Road”. The construction of the “Belt and Road” by China and Singapore with other partners will not only deepen the connotation of China-Singapore all-round cooperative partnership and open up broader space for Singapore’s development, but also inject more positive energy into regional peace and prosperity.
