On the evening of April 18, 2017, Premier Li Keqiang held telephone talks with Prime Minister Justin Trudeau of Canada at request.
Li Keqiang expressed that Prime Minister Justin Trudeau of Canada and I successfully exchanged visits and held the first annual ministerial dialogue last year, which elevated bilateral relations to a new stage. At present, various outcomes are being implemented actively and effectively. China-Canada Economic and Financial Strategic Dialogue is about to initiate and the second meeting of the exploratory discussions about setting up a free trade area (FTA) between China and Canada is to be held. As important economies in the Asia-Pacific region, to enhance high-level communication as well as expand practical cooperation between China and Canada are not only conducive to pushing bilateral relations towards a higher level, but also beneficial to safeguard a peaceful international environment, a stable regional environment and a free trade environment.
Li Keqiang pointed out that China is willing to make joint efforts with Canada to expand bilateral trade and two-way investment, enhance cooperation in tackling climate change, and cooperate in new areas such as clean energy to create new growth points for cooperation. It is hoped that Canada could ease restrictions on high-tech exports to China, which is believed to be conducive to the balanced growth of bilateral trade as well as the improvement and upgrade of practical cooperation.
Justin Trudeau expressed that attaching great importance to developing friendly cooperation with China, Canada is delighted at the progress made in the implementation of outcomes from mutual visits between Prime Minister of Canada and Chinese Premier. The initiation of Canada-China Economic and Financial Strategic Dialogue and the smooth advancement of the FTA exploratory discussions mark that bilateral cooperation is developing on the right track. Canada stands ready to, together with China, expand bilateral trade and investment exchanges as well as practical cooperation in various fields, create more opportunities of development and win-win results, and make contributions to helping the international community to tackle global challenges and promote peace and development.
Both sides also exchanged in-depth views on international and regional issues of common concern.
