Wang Yi Speaks with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov on the Phone
2021-08-17 14:26

On August 16, 2021, State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi had a phone conversation with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov at request.

Wang Yi said, since the beginning of this year, under the strategic guidance of President Xi Jinping and President Vladimir Putin, the two countries, centering on celebrating the 20th anniversary of the signing of the China-Russia Treaty of Good-Neighborliness and Friendly Cooperation, have adhered to the original aspiration of friendship from generation to generation, implemented the concept of mutual benefit and win-win results, promoted world peace and development, upheld international fairness and justice, and pushed bilateral relations and cooperation across the board for fruitful results.

Wang Yi said that recently, Russia has participated in the joint signing and sent a separate letter to the World Health Organization (WHO), opposing the politicization of the COVID-19 origin tracing and questioning the WHO's plan for the second phase of studies into the origins of COVID-19 put forward by the WHO Secretariat, which reflects the spirit of high-level strategic coordination between China and Russia.

Wang Yi said, China and Russia are truly strategic cooperative partners that can be trusted, counted on, and cannot be crushed by each other. Some Western forces are trying to drive a wedge between our two countries. Such attempts will never succeed. The two sides should continue to strengthen high-level exchanges, deepen political mutual trust and consolidate "back-to-back" strategic coordination.

Lavrov said that the comprehensive strategic partnership of coordination for a new era between Russia and China has developed vigorously and achieved fruitful results. The two sides have joined hands in fighting the pandemic and have made contributions to safeguarding the health of the two peoples and international cooperation in the fight against the pandemic. The current high level of Russia-China relations has surpassed the military and political alliance during the Cold War, which the Russian side is satisfied with. Russia is willing to cooperate with China to hold a series of celebration activities in the two countries around the 20th anniversary of the signing of the China-Russia Treaty of Good-Neighborliness and Friendly Cooperation.

The two sides also exchanged in-depth views and coordinated positions on international and regional issues of common concern.
