Wang Yi Meets with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov
2021-07-16 14:00

On July 15, 2021 local time, State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi met with Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov in Tashkent.

Wang Yi said, not long ago, President Xi Jinping and President Putin held an important video meeting, officially deciding to extend the China-Russia Treaty of Good-Neighborliness and Friendly Cooperation and issuing a joint statement in this regard. Guided by the spirit of the Treaty and the joint statement, we should unswervingly deepen our comprehensive strategic coordination and promote practical cooperation to further elevate our bilateral relations.

Wang Yi said that COVID-19 is still spreading around the world and there is still a long way to go to fight against the pandemic by international cooperation. Both sides should make joint efforts with the international community to resolutely fight against two viruses: First, we should deepen cooperation on vaccines against COVID-19. Second, we should strengthen solidarity and coordination to repel the political virus. We should continue to work together to resist stigmatization and politicization of the pandemic and the origin tracing of the virus, and jointly defend the authority of science.

Wang Yi said, this year marks the 20th anniversary of the establishment of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO). China is ready to work with Russia to carry forward the Shanghai Spirit and push the SCO to achieve higher quality development in the next 20 years, making greater contributions to maintaining regional stability and promoting joint development.

Wang Yi pointed out that China and Russia made tremendous sacrifices in the World Anti-Fascist War and made significant contributions to the establishment of the United Nations (UN). As permanent members of the UN Security Council, the two sides should bear a sense of responsibility for history, and firmly uphold the purposes and principles of the UN Charter and the core role of the UN in international affairs. The two sides should jointly expose all forms of "pseudo multilateralism", prevent the undermining of the international order in the name of rules, and firmly safeguard true multilateralism. The two sides should maintain coordination and cooperation, stand unequivocally against external interference in internal affairs, jointly oppose bloc confrontation and reverse of the course of history, and safeguard international peace and stability. The two sides should deepen coordination in regional affairs, work together to bring Afghanistan back to the track of peace, resist the "Indo-Pacific Strategy" full of Cold War mentality, and jointly promote peaceful development in the Asia-Pacific region.

Lavrov said, Russia-China relations are at the best in history. As the joint statement issued by the two sides last month pointed out, Russia-China relations are not similar to a military and political alliance in the Cold War era, but a new type of state-to-state relations that transcends that model. Russia and China should jointly and firmly resist the efforts of some countries that engage in clique diplomacy and only listen to what they like to rebuild a unipolar world. Russia supports China in hosting the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympic Games and is ready to deepen cooperation with China within multilateral frameworks such as the BRICS, the SCO and the United Nations, as well as to keep close coordination with China on holding the summit of the five permanent members of the UN Security Council, preventing an arms race in outer space, and safeguarding international biosecurity and information security. Russia also hopes to strengthen communication and coordination with China on Central Asia and Asia-Pacific affairs, guard against the disruption of regional peace by the so-called "Indo-Pacific Strategy" and jointly safeguard regional and world stability and prosperity.
