On June 21, 2003, Thai Prime Minister Thaksin
Shinawatra met with visiting Foreign Minister Li Zhaoxing in
Chiang Mai.
Thaksin welcomed Li's
participation in the Second Ministerial Meeting of the Asia
Cooperation Dialogue (ACD). He said that the affection
between Thailand and China was just like that between family
members, and the effective cooperation between them had
brought about practical benefits to the two peoples. He said
the recent agreement between the two countries on vegetable
and fruits tariffs was a good example of Sino-Thai
cooperation. He said Thailand was willing to advance
strategic and comprehensive cooperation with China, and to
cooperate with China within the ACD framework in an effort
to promote prosperity and stability in Asia.
Li Zhaoxing said that Thailand was a friendly
neighbor of China in Southeast Asia and the two countries
had treated each other sincerely and trusted each other. The
China-Thailand relations were exemplary among countries of
different systems. He said China had listed Thailand as one
of the most important cooperative partners in the region and
was willing to further promote high-level official exchange
between the two countries and to expand reciprocal
cooperation in more fields so as to push the all-facet and
high-level cooperative relations to a new level.
On the upcoming ACD meeting, Li said that the
ACD, initiated by Thaksin, was of strategic importance and
was a good thing for peoples from various Asian countries.
He stressed on China's further support for and participation
in the ACD activities.
After the meeting, the
foreign ministers of the two countries signed the Treaty
between the Kingdom of Thailand and the People's Republic of
China on Mutual Assistance in Criminal Matters. Thaksin
attended the signing ceremony.
Li also met
with the foreign ministers of Bangladesh, Pakistan,
Indonesia and the Philippines. He stressed that the foothold
of the Chinas policy towards neighboring countries was
remaining good friends and good partners with neighbors and
was ready to strengthen regional cooperation to make
contribution to the peace and development of Asia and the
whole world at large.
On the same day, Li also
attended informal breakfast meeting on anti-drug issue among
China, Thailand, Myanmar, Laos and India. The foreign
ministers and delegates of the five countries reached
consensus to strengthen coordination, especially on the
fight against planting and selling of drugs near border
areas of the five countries.
