On the afternoon of June 3, 2003, visiting President
Hu Jintao met with Kazakh Prime Minister Imangali
Tasmagambetov and leaders of both houses of the parliament
Oralbai Abdykarimov and Zharmakhan Tuyakbayev respectively
for deep discussions on bilateral relations and the
deepening of mutually beneficial cooperation.
During his meeting with Hu, Tasmagambetov
briefed about Kazakhstan's current economic and social
development as well as plans for the next stage. He said
that Kazakhstan was adjusting its economic structure in a
bid to gradually change the resources-exporting economy into
a manufacturing one and accelerate agricultural reform. He
said this would provide an opportunity for further economic
and trade cooperation between China and Kazakhstan, adding
that Kazakhstan welcomed China's participation in its
economic adjustment and development.
Hu spoke
highly of Kazakhstan's fast economic growth in recent years
with its own advantages fully tapped. He said that The
economic and trade cooperation between the two sides have
developed rapidly and achieved great results. He noted that
some large and medium sized cooperation programs initiated
by both sides had enriched the contents of China-Kazakhstan
economic and trade cooperation and further elevated the
level of economic cooperation. He expressed the
hope that while actively pursuing the cooperation in the
energy field, the two sides would expand economic and
technological cooperation within the framework of the
Shanghai Cooperation Organization, as well as cooperation in
transportation, manufacturing and other fields. He noted he
believed that China- Kazakhstan economic and trade
cooperation enjoyed a broad outlook for development.
Meeting Senate (Upper House) Chairman Oralbai
Abdykarimov and Mazhlis (Lower House) Chairman, Hu made
positive comments on the all-round development of bilateral
relations in the recent years and said that both China's
National People's Congress (NPC) and Kazakhstan's parliament
played important roles in the political arena of their own
countries. Pointing out the exchanges between the
legislative bodies of both countries were an important part
of bilateral relations, Hu proposed they increase contacts
and learn from each other on improving legislative
activities and strengthening law monitoring. He wished the
special committees and friendship groups of the legislative
bodies of both countries could strengthen exchanges to
prosper the all-round development of bilateral ties. Hu also
briefed Abdykarimov and Tuyakbayev about China's efforts in
fighting severe acute respiratory syndrome (SARS), stressing
that China had the determination, confidence and capability
to win the combat against it, while achieving the economic
prosperity.
Both Abdykarimov and Tuyakbayev
noted that the Kazakh side highly evaluated the overall
development and consolidation of bilateral friendly
cooperation. They promised that the two houses of the Kazakh
parliament would make more efforts to contribute to further
development of relations between the two countries. They
said that members of both houses of Kazakhstan attached
great importance to the practices and experience of NPC on
strengthening jural construction in the recent years, hoping
that the two legislative bodies would intensify exchanges to
act as a major bridge and bond between the two peoples in
strengthening contacts, mutual learning and common progress.
