Spokeswoman Zhang Qiyue on the Current Middle East Situation
2003-05-19 00:00

Q:Recently, Israeli Prime Minister Sharon met with Palestinian Prime Minister Abbas. Shortly afterwards, two suicidal bombs exploded in Jerusalem. What is China’s comment on the current situation in Israel and Palestine?

A: The current situation in Israel and Palestine is at a critical moment. On one hand, with the efforts of the international community, the prime ministers of Israel and Palestine held their first meeting. China welcomes and appreciates this positive move. On the other hand, violent conflicts between the two sides continue, causing great casualties and property losses. We are very much concerned about it. We call upon the Israeli and Palestinian sides to grasp the current favorable opportunity, actively cooperate with the efforts of the international society, stop violent conflicts immediately and carry out peace talks as soon as possible.
