2003-04-07 00:00

On April 7, 2003, State Councilor Tang Jiaxuan met with visiting Japanese Foreign Minister Yoriko Kawaguchi at Diaoyutai.

Tang said that this year marks the 25th anniversary of the Treaty of Peace and Friendship between China and Japan. The two sides should abide by and carry on the principle and essence of the treaty and deepen mutually beneficial cooperation in all areas. China and Japan should strengthen cooperation and coordination in East Asia and make positive contributions to the peace and development in Asia and the world. He also pointed out that the two countries should pay much attention to and properly deal with the historical and Taiwan questions which affect the healthy development of bilateral relations, in an effort to safeguard the political foundation of China-Japan relations.

Kawaguchi agreed with Tang and said based on the correct recognition of the history, Japan is willing to adhere to the principles set forth in the three political documents signed by Japan and China and create a new history between the two countries. She said China is playing an increasingly important role in the world. The two countries should further expand common interests and strengthen coordination and cooperation in international, especially regional affairs.
