President Jiang Zemin Met With Thai Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra

On February 19, 2003, President Jiang Zemin met with Thai Prime Minister Thaksin Shinawatra at Zhongnanhai.

Jiang said that Thaksin is dedicated to China-Thailand friendship and has made active contribution to the development of bilateral relations. The Thai government has given China precious support on many major issues, and China appreciates that. He also spoke highly of Thaksin's contribution to regional cooperation in Asia and regional stability and development.

Jiang said that China-Thailand relations are very close. There are no outstanding issues between us, only friendship and cooperation. Since the establishment of diplomatic relations, we have treated each other with sincerity and trusted each other. China-Thailand relations have maintained stable and sustained development. The belief that China and Thailand are as close as one family is deeply rooted. It can be said that China-Thailand friendship has reached all dimensional, in-depth and high-level development. We are satisfied and hope that China-Thailand friendship will enter into a beautiful future.

Jiang said that for a long time, the Thai King and the royal family have worked actively for China-Thailand traditional friendship and had great influence. China appreciates it. He asked Thaksin to convey his greetings to King Bhumibol.

Thaksin asked King Bhumibol's cordial greetings to Jiang, and thanked Jiang for the great importance he attached to Thailand-China relations. He said that President Jiang has made great contributions to international and regional peace and development. China's rapid economic development has promoted regional and world economic growth. Jiang has provided precious support for the Thai initiative of regional cooperation, and Thailand appreciates that.

Thaksin said that Thailand is forever China's most sincere friend. The Thai government and he himself will promote Thailand-China relations unswervingly and will as always stick to the One China policy.

Jiang also explained his views on the current international situation and emphasized that China desires peace, and the Iraq issue should be resolved through political means within the framework of the United Nations. China sincerely hopes the Korean Peninsula will remain peaceful and stable. China supports the non-nuclearization of the peninsula and hopes the parties involved will resolve the existing issue through dialogue.

Thaksin said he fully agreed with Jiang's comments, adding that Thailand hopes China will play an important role in maintaining peace and avoiding war.
