On February 6, 2003, Shi Jiuyong, the
Chinese judge of the International Court of Justice, was
elected President of that institution, on which Chinese
Foreign Minister Tang Jiaxuan congratulated him by sending a
telegram that goes as follows:
February 6, 2003
Beijing
His Excellency Judge Shi Jiuyong,
President of the International Court of
Justice Hague
Your
Excellency,
Glad to hear that you were elected
President of the International Court of Justice on February
6, 2003. I sincerely congratulate you on that. You are the
first Chinese who was ever elected President of the
International Court of Justice. Your election shows how the
international society affirms your erudition and your
justness. It is the glory of you yourself, of the Chinese
law field, and of our country and people.
I
genuinely hope that during your tenure, the International
Court of Justice can give play to a more important role in
peacefully resolving international conflicts and in
safeguarding the world peace.
I would like to
avail myself of this opportunity to wish you good
health.
Tang Jiaxuan
