On the evening of February 7, 2003, US President
George W. Bush called President Jiang Zemin, during which he
briefed Jiang on the USÂ’ stance and considerations on
the Iraqi issue and the nuclear issue in the Democratic
People's Republic of Korea (DPRK).
Jiang
reiterated the Chinese government's principled position on
the Iraqi issue, pointing out that the two UN organizations'
weapon inspectors in Iraq had made some progress on the
whole, but there still existed some problems. The Iraqi side
had an obligation to respond to the problems, and it should
cooperate more actively with the United Nations and possess
no weapons of mass destruction. China holds that support
should be given to the two UN organizations in the
strengthening of their weapons inspections in
Iraq.
Jiang said that it is the common
aspiration of the international community to safeguard the
Security Council's authority when dealing with significant
issues like the Iraqi issue
Concerning the
DPRK nuclear issue, Jiang said a nuclear-free, peaceful and
stable Korean Peninsula was the consensus of the
international community. He voiced the hope that parties
concerned will make joint efforts for a peaceful solution to
the DPRK nuclear issue.
