President Jiang Zemin Had a Phone Conversation with President Bush
2003-01-10 00:00

On the evening of January 10, Chinese President Jiang Zemin had a phone conversation with US President George W Bush. The two sides exchanged views on the nuclear question of the DPRK.

Bush introduced US’s position on the nuclear question of the DPRK, stressing that US will definitely not accept the DPRK’s actions. He said that the decision of the DPRK to withdraw from the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty is not in the interest of the DPRK, and will undermine peace and stability of the region as well. Bush said that US is still willing to solve the nuclear question of the DPRK through dialogue.

Jiang Zemin said that China is not in favor of the withdrawal of the DPRK from the NPT. He said that China stands for the denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula. China believes that safeguarding the international regime of nuclear non-proliferation conforms to the common interest of the international community. Dialogue is the most effective way to solve the nuclear question of the DPRK. China will work together with the relevant parties to seek the early peaceful solution to the nuclear question of the DPRK.
