On the afternoon of October 28, 2010, Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Ma Zhaoxu held a regular press conference.

Q: US Secretary of State Clinton will have a meeting with Chinese State Councilor Dai Bingguo. Please specify the date and other related information.

A: As agreed by China and the US, State Councilor Dai Bingguo will have an informal meeting with US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton in Hainan Province within the next few days to exchange views on China-US relations and issues of common interest.

Q: Do you have any update on the meeting between Premier Wen Jiabao and Indian Prime Minister Singh tomorrow?

A: China and India are staying in close communication on this issue.

Q: Will Premier Wen Jiabao meet with Japanese Prime Minister Kan on the sidelines of the East Asia Summit meetings?

A: We hope there be suitable conditions and atmosphere for a meeting between the two leaders.

Q: It's reported that a meeting of economic ministers from China, Japan and the ROK scheduled to be held on the sidelines of the East Asia Summit meetings has been cancelled by China due to the rare earth dispute. Could you confirm?

A: China is positive towards holding a China-Japan-ROK economic ministers' meeting in a certain way on the sidelines of the East Asia Summit meetings, and has been actively cooperating with coordinators. It's learnt that the arrangement for the meeting failed only because of conflict of programs. Relevant report does not accord with the fact.

Q: It's reported that former President Kirchner of Argentina passed away on October 27. How do you comment? Has China sent a message of condolences to the Argentine side?

A: Former President Kirchner was an outstanding leader of Argentina and an old friend of the Chinese people, who had made great contributions to promoting China-Argentina strategic partnership. The Chinese Government expresses deep condolences over the death of former President Kirchner and extends sincere solicitude towards his family, the Argentine Government and people. Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi has sent a message of condolences to his Argentine counterpart Timerman.

Q: It's reported that an earthquake with a magnitude of 7.2 rattled the Indonesian island of Sumatra, causing hundreds of casualties. Do you have any comment? Has China sent condolences to the Indonesian side? Will you consider any assistance to offer?

A: On October 25, a major earthquake and ensuing tsunami struck off the Indonesian island of Sumatra, causing heavy casualties and property loss. The Chinese Government and people express great concern and sympathy. President Hu Jintao has sent a message of condolences to Indonesian President Susilo and Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi has also sent a telegraph of condolences to Indonesian Foreign Minister Marty. The Red Cross Society of China has offered a donation of 30,000 US dollars to its Indonesian counterpart for relief efforts.

After the earthquake, the Foreign Ministry and Chinese Embassy in Indonesia immediately launched the emergency mechanism to learn about the situation of Chinese citizens and institutions in the country. Up to date, there's no report about Chinese casualties.
